Low Self Esteem

Difficulties We Work With

What is Low Self Esteem?

Self-esteem is the way you view yourself as a person. Sometimes, we might also use the term self-confidence, self-concept, or self-worth.

As humans, we can occasionally feel negatively about ourselves, when we think we could have done better or if we are unhappy with our appearance. Individuals who experience low self-esteem will feel negatively towards themselves in several areas of life and will be ongoing. They also may tend to also speak to themselves in a negative, harsh and critical way.

Individuals who experience low self-esteem may constantly question themselves and will have reduced confidence in school or their workplace, in their relationships, and generally in their everyday life.

Although low self-esteem looks different for everyone, some common experiences are:

  • Believing that others are better than you
  • Difficulty expressing your needs
  • Focusing on your weaknesses
  • Frequently experiencing fear, self-doubt or worry
  • Having a negative outlook on life, or feeling a lack of control
  • Experiencing an intense fear of failure
  • Difficulty accepting positive feedback
  • Difficulty saying no and setting boundaries
  • Putting other people’s needs before your own
  • Difficulty feeling confident

Low self-esteem can lead to feelings of depression and anxiety, and one may experience challenges in pursuing goals and maintaining healthy relationships.
