Difficulties We Work With

What is Depression?

Depression affects how one feels, thinks and behaves, and can lead to several emotional and physical difficulties, most commonly causing low mood. Individuals with depression may also feel like life is not worth living. Depression can occur suddenly or gradually, and the severity and symptoms can vary for each person. Some people may continue to do things they usually do, but may have low energy, feel flat, or find it difficult to concentrate. Others may find it difficult to get out of bed, dress, eat or take care of themselves. Depression is experienced by 1 in 16 Australians every year.

Some common symptoms of depression include:

  • Feelings of worthlessness and guilt
  • Feeling sad, down, overwhelmed or miserable
  • Loss of interest and pleasure in usual activities
  • Sleeping too much or not being able to sleep
  • Changes in appetite
  • Feeling slow and sluggish
  • Feeling agitated and restless
  • Feelings of tiredness and lack of energy
  • Lack of motivation
  • Reduced sexual interest
  • Social withdrawal
  • Difficulty concentrating and making decisions
  • Thoughts of suicide or self-harm

These symptoms can make it difficult for individuals to manage day to day and can also make it challenging to find the energy and motivation to seek help. Our clinical psychologists at mindright can help develop your understanding of your symptoms and provide you with techniques to manage your symptoms of depression.
