What are Developmental Disorders?

Developmental disorders are a group of conditions characterised by impairments in a child’s physical, cognitive, language or behavioural development. Such impairments can impact everyday functioning and typically last throughout a person’s lifetime and can take a toll on an individual’s physical, intellectual and emotional growth.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is one of the most common developmental disabilities, and approximately 1 in 100 people in Australia have Autism.

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how a person learns and interacts with the world around them. Autism is often referred on a ‘spectrum’ as there are a number of ways in which Autism can be experienced. While people with Autism Spectrum Disorder may share similar traits, there are an equal number of differences, and the experience varies greatly from person to person.

Some common characteristics of Autism include:

  • Trouble interacting, playing with, or relating to others
  • Little or brief eye contact with others
  • Unusual or repetitive movements, such as hand flapping, spinning, or tapping
  • Delays in developmental milestones or loss of already-achieved milestones
  • Difficulties learning in school
  • Playing with toys in ways that seem odd or repetitive
  • Low muscle tone, clumsiness, and poor spatial awareness
